This photo was taken while celebrating the 98th Independence Day of the Republic of Estonia. Standing at the Freedom Square, I felt a sense of happiness and pride for my nation. It’s been almost twenty five years since our separation from the Soviet Union and we’ve come a long way since then. Although our country has progressed on its own, I’ll never forget the time of occupation. I believe this provides our nation with a true sense of freedom. Remembering where we came from will not allow us to ever forget what our freedom is worth. Reminiscing on our culture makes me think about the current situation in Ukraine. The compassion I have, I believe is derived from an understanding that, without NATO, Estonia could’ve met the same fate. Since Estonia is a member of NATO, an attack on our soil would cause all active countries to respond. Therefore, to me NATO is symbolic of our countries security and freedom. Being a small place, with little population and a dangerous geographic location, we could be perceived as a vulnerable state. However, with our allies, Estonia is strong and free. The world is constantly changing and I am very lucky that my country belongs to the world’s strongest union.
